Lisbon is the capital of Portugal that is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Portugal is the westernmost country in Europe that is bordered by Spain to the north and the east, and Atlantic Ocean to the south. The city is known the world over for its pleasing Fado music and cafe culture. History is very much alive in the beaches of Lisbon. You can stroll along the seaside where centuries ago Vasco da Gama had returned triumphant having located the sea route to India. Bright yellow trams in the city run across tree lined streets. Riding the trams, you can view the old quarters in Lisbon that have remained somewhat the same for centuries.
There are various 1930s-era cafes that offer delectable delicacies not found anywhere else. You can enjoy your time listening to pleasing fado music at any cafe in Lisbon, which is a traditional Portuguese song that is pleasing to the ears.
Meanwhile, Bairro Alto, the hilltop district in Lisbon, has various restaurants in line with the narrow street, with reggae, jazz, electronica, and traditional fado music filling the air. The eateries are located all over the city. You can find an eatery tucked away in an 18th century mansion or a few near riverside docks. Whichever place you decide to dine-in, you are sure to enjoy the beautiful scenery outside the restaurant or cafe.
South of the city, you will find sandy beaches and dunes at the Costa da Caparica and Sesimbra that are extremely popular among tourists during summer months. These beaches offer a large area of unspoiled countryside that stretches all along the coastline. Lisbon offers all the delight you can expect in a modern European city. However, the real delight of spending your holidays in this city lies in visiting the small towns that are located in its vicinity. Visitors spend much of their time at the northern part of Lisbon where there are many delightful beaches and castles.
Notable towns near the city include Sintra, Queluz, Mafra, and Ericerira. The first three are known for their luxury Versailles like palaces, while Ericerira is a traditional fishing town near Lisbon. Individuals can also enjoy magnificent vista of the Atlantic beaches in Estroil and Cascais. All these towns are easily accessible from Lisbon through public and private transportation. Once you know where is Lisbon, you will not have much trouble in visiting the nearby towns.
Apart from natural wonders that you can enjoy, there are various manmade attractions in and around the city as well. Visitors can have a great time strolling in one of the various parks, gardens, and palaces. Just standing near the entrance of palaces will amaze you by their extravagance and grandeur. Now that you know exactly where is Lisbon located, you should start making plans to make it your next travel destination.
