Where is Belarus? The Republic of Belarus is located in Eastern Europe that was declared a sovereign nation in 1991. Belarus is a landlocked country that is bordered by Poland to the west, Latvia and Lithuania to the northwest, Russia to the northeast, and Ukraine to the south. The capital of Belarus is Minsk, while it is home to five other major cities in Eastern Europe.
Nearly 70% of the total population of the country resides in urban cities and areas, and majority of the population is of Belarusian ethnicity followed by significant representation from ethnic groups such as Poles, Ukrainians and Russians. Approximately 40% of the country is covered in forests, and it experiences maritime and continental climates, making the weather pleasant for most part of the year. However, the weather can get extremely cold during the winter, especially in cities like Brest and Vitebsk.
Where Is Belarus in history? The area that makes the Republic of Belarus today was home to the people of the Bandkeramik culture that settled here from 5000 BC to 2000 BC. However, it wasn’t until the 3rd century that the Baltic tribes first arrived on these lands, and since then, the area has gone through many regime changes, some of which were peaceful, that make its culture so unique. While Belarus was declared a sovereign state in July 1990, it officially became the Republic of Belarus by gaining independence from the USSR in August 1991.
There are many historic, cultural, and entertainment places to visit in Belarus. In fact, the country is home to four World Heritage Sites designated by UNESCO, including Mir Castle Complex, Belovzhskaya Pushcha, Struve Geodetic Arc, and Nesvizh Castle. The beauty of Belarus is not only in its architecture, but also in its nature. This is apparent by the Braslaw Lakes, one of the national parks in Belarus that comprises of an area of 700 square kilometers featuring a unique ecosystem of pine forests and numerous lakes.
The Gorky Park in the capital city is an iconic public park with sports and recreational facilities, an open air theater to enjoy the fine arts and entertainment scene of the capital, and a café to indulge in the distinct cuisine of Belarus. Hence, it’s no surprise that the Gorky Park is also one of the popular places to visit in Belarus. Despite being a landlocked country, Belarus has a distinct geography and many attractions that make it a unique place to visit in Eastern Europe. Depending on your interests, you will surely find something engaging to do while in Belarus!
