Where is Belize? Belize is a country in Central America, and is by far, the only country in the region with English as the official language. Situated in the east coast of Central America, Belize is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.

Belize is a relatively small country. It stretches by 180 kilometers from north to south and 100 kilometers from east to west. Today, Belize has the second highest population growth in Central America as the population of the country increased by 1.87% in 2015 alone. The area that is known as Belize was first inhabited by the Maya civilization sometime around 3000 BC in what is today known as Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. The Maya civilization thrived from 250 AD until Spanish conquistadors arrived in the region, followed by a brief period of British rule. European conquests led to nearly 500 years of cultural influence in the area as well, and Belize was given independence in September 1981.
