Where is Belize? Belize is a country in Central America, and is by far, the only country in the region with English as the official language. Situated in the east coast of Central America, Belize is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
Belize is a relatively small country. It stretches by 180 kilometers from north to south and 100 kilometers from east to west. Today, Belize has the second highest population growth in Central America as the population of the country increased by 1.87% in 2015 alone. The distinct geography, coastline, and forestation in Belize make it one of the most beautiful countries in the central region.
Where is Belize in terms of history and culture? The area that is known as Belize was first inhabited by the Maya civilization sometime around 3000 BC in what is today known as Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. The Maya civilization thrived from 250 AD until Spanish conquistadors arrived in the region, followed by a brief period of British rule. European conquests led to nearly 500 years of cultural influence in the area as well, and Belize was given independence in September 1981.
There are many places to visit in Belize as it is quite popular for its tourism in Central America, and is gaining international recognition as a scuba diving and snorkeling retreat. It attracts more than 260,000 visitors from all over the world who consider it a paradise for marine life exploration. After all, it is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, The Belize Barrier Reef, which is designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
As Belize has a tropical climate, the weather is pleasant throughout the year, and the 450 offshore islands, known as Cayes, give tourists various options as to how they want to spend their vacations. For instance, the Ambergris Caye is where you can find luxury accommodation, dining, and entertainment and recreational facilities. Further to the south are other offshore cayes and places to visit in Belize where you can spend your vacation in seclusion.
Regardless of where you decide to stay, make sure that you are in Belize during September as celebrations and carnivals are hosted throughout the country during this time. September presents a great opportunity to celebrate the culture, heritage, and music of Belize against the backdrop of the most picturesque skies in the world.
