Where is Central African Republic? Central African Republic (CAR) is a country in Central Africa that was colonized by the French in the late 19th century until it gained independence in 1960. Central African Republic is a landlocked country that is bordered by Chad from the north, Sudan and South Sudan from the northeast and east, Democratic Republic of Congo and Republic of Congo from the south, and Cameroon from the west.

The country has a diverse geography, where two thirds of it is nestled on the basin of the Ubangi River, while the remaining one third lies on the Chari River basin that flows to Lake Chad. Much of the land consists of savannas, but there are areas in the country that consist of equatorial forest zones, especially in the southern regions.

The Central African Republic is based on an area of 620,000 square kilometers with a population of approximately 4.7 million inhabitants. It is one of the longest and continuously inhabited parts of the world, having been a settlement for a millennium. The borders of CAR were defined by the French when they colonized the region.

The country mostly consists of flat or rolling savannas lying nearly 500 meters above sea level. The Dzanga Sangha National park in the south and the ManovoGounda St Floris National Park in the north are two of the most popular national parks in the country for tourism. These parks offer rainforest lodging facilities along with guided and self-guided tours of the local wildlife that comprises of lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and lowland gorillas.

Music is a major part of the local culture influenced by western rock and pop along with soul and Afrobeat genres. Bangui is the national capital and the largest city, along with being one of the top places to visit in Central African Republic. It has retained its colonial history throughout the central market square, where you can buy arts and crafts for cheap while also exploring the Bonganda Museum and Bangui Zoo.
