Italy is a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. The country is located in southern part of Europe and shares borders with Austria, Switzerland, France, San Marino, Slovenia, and the Vatican City. The sovereign states of the Vatican City and San Marino are enclaves that are located inside Italy. It contains more than 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites, testament to the cultural wealth of the country.
The area where is Italy located is divided into 20 regions with 9 metropolitan cities and 101 provinces for administrative purposes. The Apennine Mountains form the backbone of the peninsula while the Alps form the northern boundary where the Mont Blanc is located, which is the highest mountain in Italy and the EU. River Po is the longest river in Italy that flows from the west crosses the Padan plain and empties in the Adriatic Sea.
Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. In 2015, it was declared the second most visited country in the world, just after France with around 79.6 million tourists. You can find many interesting places to visit in Italy. Most of the people are attracted to the country due to its cuisine, art, history, culture, fashion, mountains, and scenic beaches. A number of beautiful ski resorts are also located in the area where is Italy.
Some of the well known ski resorts in the country include like Courmayeur, Sestriere, Livigno, Breuil-Cervinia, and Bormio. These places are full of visitors during the winter season. Rome is the most visited city in the country. There are various wonderful attractions found in the city. The Colosseum, Vatican Museum, the Trevi Fountain, Piaza Navona, and the Roman Forum some of the most frequently visited places in the city.
The city of Milan is another great tourist spot in Italy. Piazza del Duomo in Milan contains plenty of famous attractions including the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II, Museum of the Duomo, and the Palazzo Real.
Florence is well known for magnificent architecture, art, and museum, while Venice is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world mostly due to its canals. St. Mark's Square in Venice is mostly crowded with tourists during presence of magnificent medieval architecture. Other interesting places to visit in Italy include the Genoa, Aosta, Brescia, Bergamo, and Como.
