Lyon is one of the most happening cities in east-central France. It is situated in the Rhone-Alpes region, right between Marseille and Paris. Because of the different spellings used in different languages, you’re likely to find this city on all search engine results every time you type: where is Lyon, where is Liyon or where is Lyons? Lyon is in close vicinity of other major cities in France. These include Paris at 292 miles, Marseille at 199 miles and Strasbourg at 99 miles and Turin at a distance of 174 miles from the city. Lyon residents are often referred to as Lyonnais.
Saone and Rhone rivers meet at the southern end of Lyon, resulting in a peninsula (or Presqu’ile). Towards the western and northern ends, there are two large hills and large plain that sprawl towards the east. The medieval city of Vieux Lyon is on the western end of the peninsula, near the base of Fourviere hill. This area, along with the surrounding Croix-Rousse has been declared and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lyon has some of the best tourist attractions and activities in all of France. The city was the first in Europe to offer bike rental services. With several cycle lanes and picturesque routes, you need not sit in a car or hop on a bus to tour the city. Simply work on those paddles and enjoy a breath of fresh Lyon air!
Le Parc de la Tete d’Or has the famous Golden Gates that welcome visitors and tourists from all over the world. This park encompasses a huge boating lake and offers plenty of picnic spots for you to sit relax, and rest and munch on your favorite snacks. There’s also a free-entry zoo in the park that you simply cannot afford to miss. Right next to the Fourvierelay the well-preserved Roman amphitheatres that will make you forget the Coliseum. This historical landmark not only offers guided tours, but also hosts a number of musical and dance festivals and rock concerts. Bjork and Iggy Pop are some of the many internationally renowned artists who have performed here.
