Reims is a city located in the northeastern part of Paris in France. Founded by the Gauls in circa 80 B.C., Reims served as an important commercial hub during the Roman Empire. The city has been the traditional site of the crowning of kings of France during Medieval times.
Where is Reims located? Reims, also spelled as Rheims, is situated around 80 miles (129 km) from Paris. The city is located on a plain next to the Vesle River - a tributary of the Aisne River. A canal is situated nearby that connects the Aisne River with the Marne River. To the west and south of the city is located vine-clad hills and Montagne de Reims, which was designated as a regional national park in France.
Porte de Mars is one of the oldest structures here that was built during the third century AD. It is a triumphal arch 43 feet in height and 108 feet in length. The arch has detailed carvings on the ceilings and the exterior of it has three arcs. The arc had served as part of a castle and a city gate until 1817 when the surrounding buildings were removed exposing the historical arch in full view.
Place Royale de Reims and Place Cardinal-Luçon are the main squares located in the region. Main commercial streets include the Rue de Vesle that traverses the city from southwest to the northeast.
Place Drouet d'Erlon is another great tourist spot in Reims. You can find lively bars and restaurants located at this place. During the summers, it is filled with people that sit outside the many cafes and enjoy tea under the sun.
The Cathedral Notre Dame de Reims was a site in Reims where coronation of the French kings took place. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1991 due to its historical significance. Palace de Tau in Reims is another ancient monument that was designated as a heritage site by UNESCO. In this cathedral museum, you can view large states of French sovereigns adorned in grandiose robes.
Musee des Beaux Arts in Reims is another great museum in France that houses rich collection of arts of various famous artists including the Jacques Louis David. Then there is the Place Drouet d'Erlon that draws locals and tourists to dine in and shop around. You should know that where is Reims situated defines the identity of the imperial French history.
