Due to its small size and exclusive nature, it’s no wonder why many people have a hard time imagining where is Varadero. It is, primarily, a resort town located in the province of Matanzas in Cuba. As a matter of fact, Varadero is one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean. Varadero lies on the Hicacos Peninsula, between the Straits of Florida and the Bay of Cardenas. The resort is at a distance of 140km from the east of Havana and is connected to the city’s eastern border by means of the Via Blanca highway.
Varadero peninsula is hardly 1.2km wide. The Kawama Channel separates it from the main island of Cuba. Towards the northern end of the peninsula, there is abundance of virgin forests, beaches and a nature reserve- all of which are frequently visited by tourists all year round. Hicacos Point Natural Park is an ecological preserve that is a home to over 31 species of indigenous birds and approximately 24 different species of reptiles.
Moving up north, the ruins of La Calavera can be found which was the first salt mine constructed by Spanish explorers in the New World. Varadero has been developed into the leading tourist town of Cuba. It offers more than 20km of white and sandy beaches. The famous Cuban cigars come from Varadero and can be availed at cheapest of prices. The resort also offers guided jeep and boat tours around the region. In addition to beaches, it has several natural attractions such as a series of caves and a large chain of easily accessible virgin cays.
A range of cultural and historical landmarks also pave way for more tourism. The cities of Cardenas and Matanzas and the Zapata peninsula can easily be accessed from Varadero where there are several historical sites to explore.
The resort at San Miguel de los Banos offers several facilities for water sports, yachting, deep-sea fishing, and scuba diving. In the early 90s, a prominent businessman and investor built his own real estate on the resort.
Today, Varadero stands out amongst all other vacation resorts in the Caribbean with its breathtaking beauty and peaceful lifestyle. Access to nearby villages makes it possible for tourists to buy gifts and souvenirs and taste the traditional Cuban cuisine, along with other continental dishes. A trip to the resort is all it takes for you to never forget where is Varadero.
